Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

Read the following sentences :

1. The boy bought four apples.

2. The girl dances.

In the first sentence, the verb ‘bought’ needs the object ‘four apples’ to convey a complete meaning. In the second sentence, the verb ‘dances’ conveys a complete meaning by itself. It does not need any object to complete the meaning.

Remember :

* A verb that needs an object to convey a complete meaning is called a Transitive Verb.

* A verb that conveys a complete meaning by itself is called an Intransitive Verb. itive
